By far the chicest grocery store I have ever been to.

There were wine bottles that lined the walls, coca cola bottles personalized “Jason Wu” and tote bas filled with fresh flowers. Backstage hair and makeup areas had dividers and negative covid tests were required for entry. It felt safe. I was in my happy place.

Only a few in attendance, the socially distanced show felt like true NYFW again.

The pit only had a handful of photographers/videographers but that didn’t stop people from fighting for spaces like they normally do. Marking their territory and dividing up the area with masking tape, photographers were eager for the runway to start and the lights to go up.

I am so thankful IMG sent me to capture the show backstage and on the runway as models strutted through the vegetable aisles.

NYFW Fall 2018 for T Magazine

TOM FORD

When T assigned me Tom Ford's Men Show I was overwhelmed with excitement.  I was completely speechless when I saw Mr. Ford himself at the show taking notes of the models and their walks during rehearsal. It wasn't until 15 min before the show that I learned the finale would be launching his underwear collection. 

I wanted my work from this show to look different than my past. I didn't want it to look like "backstage" but more editorial in nature with a detailed focus on more portraiture. I also edited the images differently with a more desaturated color palette focusing on the body and skin tones of the models.

Wu's show was the only women's show I captured for T this season. The bold eye look allowed me to capture more beauty and portraiture than I typically do during NYFW. However the portrait of Whoopi Goldberg might be the highlight of my career thus far.

I watch The View everyday in my office and have adored Whoopi in all her accomplishments. No one was asking her for a photo as she sat front row, so I thought maybe she was unfriendly or didn't want to be photographed. I waited around until the end of the show and lingered as she greeted friends. I politely tapped her on the shoulder when I noticed a lull in the conversation. She was so sweet and posed for a portrait on the runway. I hope reading this is a reminder to all photographers to always ask for the shot! Never be intimidated. I mis-judged the situation by seeing no one shooting her and I am so happy I pushed myself to talk to her. Every time I look at the photo I smile thinking of how lucky I am to meet the people I do in my industry.

Jason Wu Fall 2017 for T Magazine

Bold red lips, blue mascara and gold velvet and glitter see-through gowns graced the halls of the St. Regis Hotel. It's a perfect setting for Jason Wu's fall collection.  

The tight hallways are a challenge for shooting full looks and the chaos begins to unfold as the show starts. I stuck around until the very end and was lucky to capture Adriana Lima and Amber Valletta congratulating Jason on a remarkable collection. Luke Wilson also was in attendance and even came backstage before the show to check out the looks. His backstage pass hanging on a lanyard around his neck  made him look more like he was part of the crowd and no one seemed to notice. My obsession with Legally Blonde kicked in and I scurried my way over to ask for a shot. "Do I look good?" he asks me as he runs his hands through his hair. I pause, stunned. Then reply "of course!" Probably a little too eager.  Another photographer pats me on the back for having the courage to approach him when no one else would.
