Shauna Mei of TomboyKC

August 16, 2016

"Meeting artisans and helping them succeed is the most meaningful part of my work. I am inspired by the 100+ applications we receive each week. We work carefully to choose the very best, after vetting quality. Then we work with the designer to help them tell their story and have their creations really shine on AHA. " says Shauna in her TKC profile.

The store is located in a loft above a tiny grocery store in DUMBO. Candles, boxing gloves, yoga mats, artwork, plants and emoji leather stickers fill the white walls. In the back of the store is a door that leads to the office, which looks the same as the store but with more computers. Neon signs hang above the entrance. It's more of a communal space than an office. You feel inspired just standing in there. Shauna has made such a name for herself as a #girlboss in the industry.

Coco Rocha for TomboyKC

July 29, 2016

Back shooting for TomboyKC in NYC is the highlight of my week.

Dream Downtown is my second home, so I was uber giddy about shooting the lovely Coco Rocha in the hotel's most fun and vibrant lobby.

Coco was fresh from her trip in Paris where she was walking in Jean Paul Gaultier. Black sleek jumpsuit and her Courtney Sweatshirt form her line CO+CO. Her BOTKIERxCOCOROCHA hybrid backpack-sling-bucket screamed practical New Yorker. My daily crossbody lacks the space for anything bigger than a memory card.

The Dream Beach was too swamped for photos mid day, not that it mattered because the lobby alone looks like 5 different locations.

I mean, a wall made of beer cans? Frat boy meets glamour chic. Definitely Instagram worthy.

Daria Einhorn for TomboyKC

October 9, 2015

During NYFW, I popped over to Brooklyn to meet Daria Einhorn of DISA for a photoshoot for TomboyKC.

First off, her place is a photographer's dream. Her home looked like it was a tearsheet from Architectural Digest. Secondly, her line for DISA is about the cutest thing ever. She had packed up all the collection for a pop up show she was having the following week. She opened the boxes and showed me the most adorable bows on coats and seersucker pants for girls and boys.

I suggested we do a shot in her office, which much like the rest of her home it was clean and white to perfection. However, across from her desk was her children's art area. To me that made more of an interesting shot. It exhibited her inspiration for children's clothes more than a shot at her desk with a laptop and phone. We ventured back to her kids playroom to do a playful shot on the bean bag chairs before I headed out. Daria is not only a talented designer, but a inspiration as a mother and caretaker.

"I always wanted to be surrounded by children, they are the coolest and silliest, smartest and illogical creatures for sure."

Eve Kessner for TomboyKC

August 14, 2015

What I love about covering Profile Shoots for TomboyKC is that I always get to meet interesting people that normally wouldn't cross my path.

Lynsey and Katie introduce me to wonderful amazingly talented women around NYC and beyond.

Eve Kessner is one of these people.

A mother to the cutest two little girls. A Soul Cycle instructor. A health guru. A brooklynite. & A writer.

We went into Eve's bedroom, where she had laid out some outfits for the shoot. Two dresses and her Soul Cycle outfit. I expressed that the shoot is about "her" and she should wear what makes her feel comfortable and most herself. She nodded and said, "Great, I am not a dress kind of girl anyways." She settled on her Brooklyn tee and cutoff jean shorts. She clipped back her pink mermaid hair and folded herself up on the couch.

Her two little girls barged through the front door of their Brooklyn apt, pinkberry in hand and eager to join in on the shoot. I captured them around the apt and outside their home before heading off to Eve's SoulCycle class at 7:30.

Eve was thrilled to have me tag along to her Soul Cycle class. We hopped into her Smart Car and drove to her Brooklyn Height's class talking about everything from NY to SoulCycle to friends to motherhood.

Everyone smiled in excitement as she walked in the door of the studio. It was clear her presence had an effect on everyone from staff to cyclers. One regular cycler sat in the front room. Eve greeted her with a hug, surprised to see her at the class. The woman said she wasn't feeling too great but was going to take the class anyways. Eve brought her over a water and asked the staff to charge her personal account. This is just a small example of her generosity and kind-hearted soul.

It was by far one of my favorite shoots for TomboyKC.

Although Eve and I spent a little over an hour together, she made an impact on me. She has a look on life that was contagious. You can tell in her voice her passion for what she does and how she lives her day to day life, which has an impact on everyone around her. There is no doubt in my mind that I won't be taking her class next time I am back in the city.

Anndra Neen for TomboyKC

July 24, 2015

I met Phoebe and Annette Stephens, the designers and founders behind the jewelry line Anndra Neen outside El Rey for a Profile photoshoot for TomboyKC.

The two arrived in vibrant embroidered coats that resembled their heritage and inspiration for their jewelry line.  We walked around the Lower East Side, but ultimately landed in front of this wooden door with gold writing on it. The door couldn't have been more perfect to place Phoebe and Annette in front of. The earth toned door matched their outfits, while the writing complimented their cuffs, rings and belts.

The two described their personal style to TomboyKC as "Mad Max meets lady who lunches."

I couldn't have said it better myself.
